I stared at him in disbelief.
“You still think this is about money.”
“Money is security!”
“No, Spencer. Security is knowing that the person sleeping beside you won’t betray you for an inheritance.”
He lowered the roses.
“Can I at least tell her I’m sorry?”
I considered it.
Then I called Chloe to the doorway.
She stood behind me, one hand resting on her stomach.
Spencer’s entire expression softened when he saw her.
“Baby.”
“Don’t call me that.”
He swallowed.
“I’m sorry. I know I hurt you.”
“You hurt me before I even had a chance to meet our daughter.”
“I was under pressure.”
“So was I. I lost two pregnancies, Spencer. I went through three treatments. I sat in hospital rooms wondering whether I would ever hear a heartbeat again. I was terrified every single day.”
Tears filled her eyes, but her voice remained steady.
