On My Wedding Night, My Father-in-Law Pressed $1,000 Into My Hand and Whispered, “If You Want to Live, Run.”

“These aren’t ordinary property documents.”

My stomach tightened.

“What are they?”

He pointed to a paragraph near the bottom of the page.

“This appears to be a consent authorizing your appointment as a director of a newly formed company.”

I stared at him.

“What company?”

“Carter Strategic Consulting LLC.”

I frowned.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Daniel looked at me.

“According to these documents, you’re its managing director.”

I felt the room tilt.

“That can’t be right.”

Rebecca turned another page.

“There are also provisions authorizing certain banking arrangements and appointing Adrian as an agent for specified company transactions.”

I looked between them.

“I thought I was signing paperwork for our house.”

Daniel’s expression was serious.

“Then we need to determine whether the documents were misrepresented to you and whether they’ve been used.”

He asked whether I had opened any business bank accounts recently.
