That conversation was humiliating.
I had worked hard to establish a reputation as a careful, reliable accountant.
Now I was explaining that my new husband’s family might have used my name in financial transactions I knew nothing about.
But my supervisor, Martin Harrison, listened carefully.
He asked me to provide the relevant information through the company’s legal department.
Then he told me something I hadn’t expected.
“Emma, we’ve already noticed irregularities in one of the Blackwood projects.”
I stared at him.
“What kind of irregularities?”
“Payments to subcontractors we can’t fully verify. Changes to vendor details. Invoices that don’t match the original agreements.”
My stomach dropped.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“Because the review was still preliminary.”
He paused.
“And because some of the transactions appear to have been approved using credentials associated with your department.”
I sat in Martin’s office, unable to speak.
