Caleb noticed too.
Every time.
A week after the flight, Darius was showing Leah an aviation app on his tablet.
Caleb entered the kitchen holding his toy airplane.
“Dad?”
“Give me one second.”
Caleb waited.
Darius didn’t look up.
“Dad?”
“I said one second.”
Leah pointed at something.
Darius smiled.
“That’s right.
Exactly.”
Caleb quietly turned around.
I followed him.
He went upstairs.
Inside his room, he placed the toy airplane on a shelf.
Then he took his
BEST PILOT EVER
drawing from his backpack.
He had never given it to Darius.
He stared at it.
“Do you want me to keep that somewhere safe?”
“No.”
He folded it again.
Smaller this time.
“Do you think Dad likes her more because she’s really his?”
The question ripped through me.
I sat beside him.
“You are really his.”
“He said my real dad was Mr.
Jonathan.”
“No.
He said Jonathan was your biological father.”
