We Secretly Boarded My Pilot Husband’s Flight to Surprise Him. His Announcement at Thirty Thousand Feet Exposed a Secret That Had Been Waiting Seven Years to Destroy Us.

“What’s the difference?”

I struggled.

“Being related to someone by DNA is one kind of connection.

Being a father is what somebody does every day.”

Caleb looked down.

“Dad isn’t doing it every day anymore.”

I had no answer.

Three weeks later, Darius said the sentence that ended our marriage.

We were standing in our bedroom.

Caleb was asleep.

Darius closed the door.

“Simone wants to discuss custody.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

“Maya—”

“No.”

“She hasn’t said she wants to take Caleb permanently.”

“Then why is custody being discussed?”

“She wants regular access.”

“She can have a relationship with him if Caleb wants one.

That is not the same as custody.”

Darius rubbed his forehead.

“And Leah?”

“What about her?”

“She’s our biological daughter.”

“She’s Simone’s child.”

“She’s also ours.”

I studied his face.

Something about his tone frightened me.

“What are you saying?”
